The hydrogeology lab at Hamilton College has at new ion chromatograph that (IC) can be used to measure the concentration of major cations and anions in water samples. Students can learn how to operate the instrument and conduct research on water quality in the region using the IC. This also involves learning how to prepare standards, develop calibration curves, and sample water from rivers and wells (groundwater) in the region.
Cations we can measure: Lithium, sodium, ammonium, potassium, magnesium, calcium
Anions we can measure: Fluoride, chloride, nitrite, bromide, nitrate, phosphate, sulfate
